Typical Itinerary
09:00 Meet at Church Square, surrounded by buildings that tell Cape Town’s colonial history. Gaze up at the fresco above the old slave quarters, then venture into the Slave Lodge Museum, which bears testament to this piece of history.
10:00 Walk back in time through a selection of Cape Town’s most significant historic landmarks each with its own story; Bo Kaap Malay Quarter, City Hall, Castle of Good Hope, Company’s Gardens, District Six Museum, Greenmarket Square, Mandela Rhodes House, St. Georges Cathedral, Wagenaer’s Reservoir.
Cape Town’s past originates long before foreigners landed on the shores, when indigenous Khoi San lived off the land, with plentiful game, good grazing, and fresh mountain water. What must they have made of the Portuguese sailors who first set foot here in the late 1400s? Great explorers the likes of Bartholomew Diaz and Vasco Da Gama left enduring legacies in the form of legends, monuments, and place names.
It was the powerful Dutch East India Company who came, liked what they found and stayed. They settled a garrison in the Cape in 1652, to supply their trading ships with food and water on their journey to Java and the east.
We recount the history of how Cape Town grew from there during this Cape Town Historic Walking Tour, with insights from our African born guides. Cape Town was shaped through its various colonial masters right up until 1994, when Nelson Mandela liberated his people.
